Kancho Mark Abela

Kancho Mark Abela is the head instructor of Bushido Freestyle Martial Arts and started his training in 1983. He achieved black belt with that first freestyle karate system some years later.

He continued training through the ranks to the level of 3rd Dan with San Chi Kai karate, achieving the prestigious Bushido award and graded with honours in both sparring and kata.

For many years he competed on the tournament scene with exceptional results.

Some of his sport karate achievements were white belt second place kumite (15 fighters), Champion fighter 1st place in green belt, brown belt and black belt levels. He twice won the black belt Northern Open Champion fighter and twice placed second. Mark has placed first nationally in the light weight kumite/sparring events and 3rd in open weight events.

Kancho Mark has trained and taught full contact ring fighting and has trained with the late kick boxing champion trainer Dana Goodson.

Over the years he has continued his training with some of his original instructors achieving his 4th and later 5th degree’s in freestyle Karate.
In 2007 Mark formed Bushido Freestyle Martial Arts with the current Bushido instructors and obtained 6th degree status.

For many years now he has also been training in Philippine sticks and knives (Arnis) and his style includes Bushido Arnis in which he is the black belt head instructor.

Mark is also proficient with Iaido sword which includes Bushido Iaido and freestyle sword, that he is also black belt head instructor.

Other weapons skills he possesses are the bo (long staff) and nunchaku which he teaches as part of Bushido Freestyle Martial Arts black belt syllabus.

Mark has been an AKWF accredited instructor for some 20 years and is first aid certified and has his working with children check.

He considers himself as a mentor to his students and black belt instructors, some of which compete in tournaments such as the International Sport Karate association (ISKA) run events, in the divisions of sparring, kata, demonstrations and weapons.

A parent once said to Mark;
“It is just as important for my children to learn martial arts as it is for them to learn how to swim” There are many reasons to learn and teach martial arts, a greater reason could not exist.

Another touching parent quote;
“Treat my children as if they were your own” It is moments like these that compel me to give the best I possibly can to all of my instructors and students.
